Basic Riding Cues

Have you ever wondered what the basic riding cues are. These are a need to know for every horse lover/aspiring rider. These should at least be read if not memorized.

Two Reins

  • Two Reins - Stop, Backwards

Three rein positions:

  • Indirect Rein - Lateral Flexion, Disengage Hindlegs
  • Direct Rein - yield shoulders
  • Supporting Rein - Control outside shoulder

Leg Cues

  • Two Legs on Girth - Go Forwards
  • Two Legs behind Gith - Backwards
  • One Leg behind Girth- Yield Hindquarters
  • One Leg on Girth - Sideways, Bend.
  • One Leg in front of Girth - Yield Forequarters.
